Managing Pain
Managing Pain
We receive calls frequently from individuals who have
questions about pain relief. We have a lot of
experience in providing patients with natural,
conservative, drug-free treatment plans that focus on
treating the underlying reason for pain, rather than
focusing on the temporary relief of symptoms only.
Depending on the underlying cause for pain, the
treatment plan may vary to some degree. Most
uncomplicated pain presentations respond very
favorably in one to four weeks, regarding a
significant decrease in the frequency and intensity
of pain symptoms.
To increase the likelihood for long-term success, at
home recommendations are usually made, so patients
can understand the importance of postural awareness,
learn how to avoid activities that could be
potentially aggravating and learn how to be as active
as possible, safely. Chronic pain presentations can
sometimes present specific challenges.
There usually is no “silver bullet” in providing
permanent, long-term symptom relief for challenging
chronic pain conditions. However, most of the
time, significant progress can be achieved, and
patients can learn to manage their pain successfully
while also minimizing the likelihood for acute
flare-ups. A comprehensive approach to treating
chronic pain is sometimes indicated, utilizing the
best options from multiple fields of study. For
example, manual therapies, traction, nutritional
interventions, custom-tailored exercise programs,
massage therapy, modifications for activities of
daily living and physiological therapeutics (i.e.
various forms of electrical stimulation to reduce
pain, to diminish muscle spasm and to alter local
circulation in order to accelerate the healing
process) are examples of components that may be
utilized in establishing a case management plan.
Chiropractic care is much more than a specific
treatment method. It is a way of incorporating
a new lifestyle paradigm so that one's health can be
improved and maximized long-term. The following
are examples of typical pain presentations that are
